Crystal Cove Cozy Mysteries

Book One

Opal Mayland was close. So close.

Less than twenty minutes stood between her and Crystal Cove, Oregon, her childhood home.

She’d spent the last six years in Arizona, learning her craft at the center of a powerful vortex. She appreciated the teachers who’d worked with her on spells and potions, since that opportunity didn’t exist for her in Crystal Cove.

But she’d had enough of the desert heat. The lush green forests full of alders, spruce, and fir trees had called to her soul, and now she was finally back to the Oregon coast.

This morning, she’d woken super early so she could roll into town just past noon. Now, she was

so close to home that she could taste the salt on the late springtime air that blew in through the car window.

Opal pressed harder on the accelerator, and the needle on the speedometer crept up. Her sparkly

blue Mustang growled as its engine kicked in, and it eased into the next curve as smooth as the surface of a mountain lake.

She smiled, loving the thrill.

Rain speckled the windshield, and she turned on the wipers to whisk it away. She didn’t mind.

She loved the rain and salty ocean breezes more than just about anything in the world. She’d missed the Pacific Northwest’s beauty almost as much as she’d missed her grandfather.

The urge to throw her arms around her grandpa, the town’s police chief, was strong, and she

hoped he wouldn’t lecture her for coming home unannounced. She also hoped he’d grown more

accepting of paranormal persons other than her. That he’d accidentally married a witch never failed to give Opal a laugh.

The sight of a dark blue police SUV nestled amongst a cluster of trees along the side of the road

reined in her thoughts. She flicked her gaze to the speedometer and cringed. Fourteen over the posted limit.

Red and blue lights flashed to life, and she groaned. She didn’t need her grandfather to hear that

the first thing she’d done on her first day back was to get a speeding ticket. He’d never let her live it down.

She let off the gas and weighed her chances of being able to talk the officer out of giving her a

citation. She’d guess fifty-fifty, which wasn’t great. But then another option popped into her mind.

What if she tried a redirection spell?

She’d been dying to try it out in the real world, but did she dare? If it worked, it would cause the officer to switch his focus to something else. If it didn’t, then she might end up with a citation.
